Pelješac Bridge, Cable-stayed bridge in Komarna, Croatia
Pelješac Bridge is a cable-stayed crossing that links the Croatian mainland near Komarna with the Pelješac peninsula over the Adriatic Sea, stretching across 2404 meters. Six tall masts hold the steel cables that support the roadway, and the entire construction rises to 240 meters at its highest point above the seabed.
After two decades of planning, construction started in July 2018, and the crossing opened to vehicles on July 26, 2022. Funding came 85 percent from the European Union, making the project the country's largest infrastructure undertaking.
The structure takes its name from the peninsula it reaches, and it changed how people move through this part of Croatia. Travelers heading south now cross the water directly, avoiding a short stretch through another country.
The roadway offers four lanes and measures about 24 meters across, allowing vehicles to move comfortably in both directions. The crossing is open to cars, buses, and trucks, and the clearance above the water lets ships pass underneath without obstruction.
The China Road and Bridge Corporation carried out construction, using concrete and steel sourced from several countries. Many Croatians watched the progress through live cameras during the entire build, which took just over four years to complete.
