Mamutica, Postmodern residential building in Travno, Croatia.
Mamutica is a residential building in the Travno district of southeastern Zagreb and one of the longest housing structures in Croatia. The facade stretches for several hundred meters along the street and consists of concrete with repeating balconies and windows on every floor.
Đuro Mirković and Nevenka Postružnik designed the complex in the early 1970s as part of the city expansion to the south. The firm Industrogradnja built the complex until 1974 and created housing for thousands of people in a growing neighborhood.
The name comes from the Croatian word for mammoth and refers to the enormous size of this housing complex in southeastern Zagreb. Residents use their own entrances and meet in the ground-floor shops or on the sidewalks around the building.
The building stands near the main road and is visible from different sides when driving through Travno. The complex has several entrances along the facade, but visitors can best observe the structure from outside.
Engineers placed special emphasis on earthquake resistance and created one of only two buildings in Zagreb with this technical classification. The construction was meant to withstand strong tremors while providing housing for many people.
