Zagreb Mosque, Islamic center in Peščenica – Žitnjak district, Zagreb, Croatia.

The Zagreb Mosque is a mosque complex in Borovje, Peščenica-Žitnjak, covering about 10,000 m², with the prayer hall and a minaret around 51 m tall on its southern side and residential and social facilities to the north. Its dome is formed from three vertical 120° sections of paraboloid surfaces at different heights, giving zenithal light to the centre. Architects Džemal Čelić and Mirza Gološ of Sarajevo designed it; Tehnika of Zagreb built it.

The initiative for a new Zagreb mosque dates to the mid-1960s, when Asim Šaćiragić campaigned for it; after a Srebrnjak plot was abandoned in the 1970s, a 17,938 m² site in Borovje was allocated in 1977. The foundation stone was laid on 11 September 1981 and construction began on 14 December, funded by a US$2.5 million donation from Sultan bin Muhammad Al-Qasimi of Sharjah. The opening ran from 3 to 6 September 1987 and drew nearly 70,000 people.

The complex also houses the Islamic Secondary School "Dr. Ahmed Smajlović" and a library, so the site is used for teaching as well as prayer. The calligraphic decoration inside was made by Ešref Kovačević, then one of the best-known Bosnian calligraphers. The mihrab is shaped as a parabolic projection from the wall, with the niche set inside it and Ayat al-Kursi (Quran 2:255) written along its edge.

The first mosque in Zagreb was not this building but the Meštrović Pavilion, converted in 1944 with added minarets and closed in 1948. The Borovje mosque, whose foundation stone was laid on 11 September 1981, was financed by a US$2.5 million donation from Sultan bin Muhammad Al-Qasimi of Sharjah, who had visited the Islamic community in Zagreb in 1983.
