Strossmayer Gallery of Old Masters, Art museum in Donji grad, Zagreb, Croatia
The Strossmayer Gallery occupies a neo-Renaissance building at Zrinski Square and houses around 4000 European paintings dating from the 14th to 19th centuries. The collection spans works from multiple countries and artistic styles across these periods.
Bishop Josip Juraj Strossmayer founded the gallery in 1868 after spending decades collecting artworks. The building later opened to the public during the same century to display his collection.
The collection features works by Italian, French, German, Flemish, and Dutch masters from different periods. You can find paintings by artists such as Beato Angelico, Vittore Carpaccio, and El Greco throughout the rooms.
The building is centrally located and easy to reach on foot, with clear signage inside for different collection areas. Set aside several hours if you want to view the paintings at a relaxed pace.
The building houses the Baška Tablet from 1102, one of the oldest examples of Croatian Glagolitic script. This historical artifact is displayed in a special case and holds great importance for Croatian heritage.
