Nine Views, Bronze solar system sculpture in Bogovićeva Street, Croatia
Nine Views is a bronze sculpture on Bogovićeva Street in Zagreb that represents our solar system at a specific scale. The polished central sphere measures 2 meters across and serves as the starting point for an artistic journey through the city, with nine additional sculptures marking planetary positions at proportionally correct distances.
Artist Ivan Kožarić created the central sun sculpture in 1971 as a standalone work in Zagreb. Davor Preis later expanded the project by adding nine bronze spheres across the city in 2004, transforming it into an astronomical model that spans the entire urban area.
The installation connects science and art by distributing metal spheres across Zagreb at distances proportional to actual planetary orbits at scale 1:680,000,000.
The sun sculpture sits in central Zagreb and is easy to reach on foot, while the other planets are scattered across several kilometers of the city. Visiting all the locations requires time and some planning to track down the scattered sites across different neighborhoods.
The installation functions as a cosmic compass for the city, with distances between the bronze spheres mirroring real planetary separations at an extremely reduced scale. This turns Zagreb itself into a walkable model of the universe that unfolds as you travel from one sculpture to the next through different neighborhoods.
