Lotrščak Tower, Fortified tower in Upper Town, Croatia
The Lotrščak Tower stands above the southern gate of the old town wall and contains four levels connected by internal stairs. A shop occupies the ground floor while exhibition spaces fill the upper floors.
The tower was built in 1266 as a defensive structure for the town and remained a key part of the fortifications for centuries. Later modifications added extra levels and changed its appearance over time.
The name comes from 'campana latrunculorum', meaning 'thieves' bell', because a bell here once signaled when the town gates closed for the night. This history shows how the structure served the daily rhythm of the old town.
The tower is located in the old town center and walkable from nearby plazas and streets. The interior stairs are narrow and steep, so allow time and wear comfortable shoes.
A cannon on the fourth floor fires daily at midday, signaling to the bell ringers across town to mark the time. This custom has continued for generations.
