Nikola Šubić Zrinski Square, Public square and park in Donji Grad, Zagreb, Croatia

Nikola Šubić Zrinski Square is a public park and plaza in Donji Grad featuring open lawns, fountains, and marble busts of historical figures. Tall plane trees brought from Trieste long ago provide shade throughout the grounds and frame the walking paths.

This former cattle market transformed into a city square in 1866, marking the start of urban development in the area. It was named after Croatian military commander Nikola Šubić Zrinski, who gave his life defending a fortress against Ottoman attack.

This square forms part of the Green Horseshoe and is surrounded by the Croatian Academy of Sciences and Arts along with cultural institutions in nearby buildings. Walking through, you notice how the space connects different parts of the city's intellectual and artistic life.

Located between Ban Jelačić Square and the Main Railway Station, this plaza sits in an easy-to-reach central location. Benches and seating areas under the trees offer good spots to rest and watch the surroundings during your visit.

Six marble busts of notable Croatian figures stand arranged along the southern part of the grounds, including sculptor Julije Klović and writer Ivan Mažuranić. These portraits honor people who made contributions to Croatian history and culture across different fields.
