Róka-hegy Cave, Underground formation in Üröm, Hungary.
Róka-hegy Cave is a limestone cave system located within an old quarry near Üröm with multiple levels and natural openings. The formation features interconnected chambers and passages that developed through decades of extraction work.
Limestone extraction started in the 19th century and continued until the 1950s, reshaping the original landscape of Róka-hegy. This industrial activity created the underground chambers that form the cave today.
The cave area serves as a training ground for rock climbers, featuring 70 different routes across its porous rock formations.
You can reach the cave by taking the HÉV train to Csillaghegy station and then following marked trails through the nearby streets. The paths are clearly signposted and lead reliably to different entrances of the cave system.
The cave provides winter shelter for multiple bat species and contains the largest population of flowering plants in the Budapest region.
