Baldongan Church, Medieval church ruins near Skerries, Ireland
The fortified church structure includes a 21-meter-high tower with defensive features and walls that showcase Norman architectural elements throughout its design.
The Knights Templar established the first church on this site in the 13th century, which later became a stronghold during the Irish Confederate Wars.
The surrounding field, known as 'Nuns Stood', connects to local traditions about religious observers witnessing the destruction of the fortress in 1642.
Visitors can reach the church by taking the R127 road toward Skerries and turning right onto the L1285, with the ruins located 500 meters down the road.
The church tower contains elaborate machicolations, defensive openings that allowed defenders to drop objects on attackers approaching the building's base.
