Baldongan Church

Baldongan Church is a ruined Norman structure near Skerries featuring a prominent tower and thick defensive walls characteristic of medieval fortified churches. The stonework displays the architectural style typical of 13th-century construction in this region.

The site was founded by the Knights Templar in the 13th century and later became a fortified position during the Irish Confederate Wars. Its strategic location made it important to the military history of the area.

The surrounding field, known as 'Nuns Stood', connects to local traditions about religious observers witnessing the destruction of the fortress in 1642.

The site can be reached from the R127 road heading toward Skerries by turning onto the L1285. The ruins sit in an open field, so sturdy footwear and weather protection are advisable.

The tower contains machicolations, medieval defensive openings that allowed defenders to drop objects on attackers below the walls. This architectural feature reveals how carefully the military design of the structure was planned.
