Cochin International Airport, International airport in Aluva, India
Cochin International Airport is an international airport in Nedumbassery, Kerala, handling millions of passengers annually across multiple terminals. The facility spreads over a large site with runways, departure and arrival halls, and a separate section for cargo handling.
The aviation facility originated in 1936 as a military airstrip during British colonial rule and served wartime purposes. Decades later, in 1999, it was converted into a civilian international hub through joint public and private investment.
The name refers to the historic port city of Cochin, and travelers can see regional artwork and murals displayed throughout the public areas. Waiting zones blend modern travel needs with Kerala aesthetics through materials and colors that echo the local landscape.
Travelers reach central Kochi by public bus, taxi, or rental car in around 45 minutes, depending on traffic conditions. Arrival and departure areas are well signposted, and multilingual information boards help with orientation inside the halls.
The entire power supply comes from a solar energy system that produces around 50,000 units daily and makes operations fully self-sufficient. This solution made the facility the first airport worldwide to run entirely on sun power.
