Hindu School, Boys school and heritage building in College Street, India
Hindu School is a boys' school and protected heritage building on College Street in Kolkata, West Bengal. It holds Grade I conservation status and teaches students through higher secondary level.
David Hare and Raja Radhakanta Deb founded the school in 1817 as the first modern institution of its kind on the continent. In the decades that followed, it became a model for other Indian educational institutions.
The name comes from the founding years of social reform in Bengal, when education opened to Hindu families. Boys arrive in white shirts and dark trousers today, attending lessons in either Bengali or English.
The location sits in Kolkata's academic district, reachable via College Street lined with bookshops and colleges. Visitors can view the building from outside on weekdays while classes are in session.
Graduates such as physicist Meghnad Saha and brothers Satyendranath and Jyotirindranath Tagore emerged from the school. Their work shaped Bengali science and culture far beyond Kolkata.
