Altenmarkt im Pongau, municipality in St. Johann/Pongau District, Salzburg, Austria
Altenmarkt im Pongau is a market municipality in the St. Johann im Pongau district, in the Austrian state of Salzburg. It sits in a valley floor between forested slopes and open farmland, with the Salzach River flowing through the broader Pongau region nearby.
The settlement grew during the Middle Ages as a market town under the authority of the Archbishopric of Salzburg, serving nearby farming communities as a place to trade goods. Over time it remained a local economic point in the Pongau Valley rather than growing into a larger town.
The name Altenmarkt means "old market" in German, and the central square still shows traces of that trading past in its layout and older buildings. People from nearby farms and villages still come here for everyday errands, giving the place a grounded, local feel.
Altenmarkt im Pongau is on the main rail line between Salzburg city and Bischofshofen, making it easy to reach by train. From the village center, paths lead directly into the surrounding hills, so it works well as a base for exploring the Pongau countryside on foot.
Although the village looks small today, it sits on a route that once connected merchants traveling from the north toward the Alpine passes to the south, which is precisely why a market formed here and not in a larger neighboring settlement. That position on an old trading corridor gave the place its name and its reason to exist as a distinct community.
