Austrian Parliament Building, Parliament building in Innere Stadt, Austria
The Parliament Building is a seat of Austrian legislative authority in the inner city. It houses two chamber halls where the National Council and Federal Council hold their sessions.
Construction started in 1874 under Emperor Franz Joseph and was completed a decade later. The building originally served as the meeting place for the Imperial Council during the Austro-Hungarian Empire.
The building displays Greek Revival architecture with marble statues of Athena and Nike at the front fountain, representing wisdom and legislative authority. These figures shape how the plaza before the entrance looks and are often photographed by visitors and passersby.
The building sits along Dr. Karl-Renner-Ring and is accessible by U3 subway to Volkstheater or U2 to Rathaus stations. The area is well-signposted and the entrance is easy to locate.
The building uses Adnet marble, an Austrian stone that gives it a warm, light surface. This material sets it apart from other grand buildings on the Ring street and gives it a distinctive look.
