Gesäuse, Valley and national park in northern Styria, Austria
The Gesäuse is a narrow valley in northern Styria with sheer limestone cliffs rising on both sides. The Enns River cuts through this deep gorge, creating a rugged landscape shaped by water flowing between high rock walls.
The valley received protection as a nature reserve in 1988 and was later designated as a national park. This designation safeguards the unique landscape and its geological features for future generations.
The village of Johnsbach within the valley maintains traditional Alpine customs and houses a cemetery dedicated to mountaineers who explored the region.
The valley is accessible by car via the A9 motorway linking Graz and Linz, with train connections to nearby stations. Exploring on foot or by canoe during warmer months gives the best experience of the landscape.
The river descends 150 meters (490 feet) through the valley, creating whitewater sections that draw paddlers. This flowing water has carved the limestone walls over thousands of years.
