The Husarentempel sits on Föhrenberg hill near Mödling and features stone columns arranged in a circular layout. Architect Joseph Kornhäusel designed the structure with open sides that frame views across the surrounding landscape.
A wooden structure originally occupied this hilltop but succumbed to storms and weather. In 1813, Kornhäusel replaced it with the stone structure that stands there today.
The memorial honors five hussars who fell during the Battle of Aspern in 1809, with their names carved into the stone structure. Walking through the site, you sense how this place marks an important moment in Austrian history.
The site is reachable via several hiking paths that lead up from Mödling and the surrounding forested hills. The elevated location offers open views of Vienna and the region, especially on clear days.
This was the first military memorial of its kind in Austria, setting a new standard for how the nation would remember its fallen. That pioneering role makes it a distinctive piece of Austrian memory.
