Moosham Castle

Moosham is a stone castle set at about 1100 meters elevation, equipped with defensive walls, a central courtyard, and multiple towers overlooking the Lungau region. Visitors can explore its interior and view art exhibitions displayed throughout the rooms.

The first written record of the castle dates to 1191, and it was built on the remains of a Roman fortress. It served for centuries as an administrative center for the Prince-Archbishops of Salzburg before its role shifted.

The castle holds a collection of sculptures, paintings, and hunting weapons that show how people lived across different periods of Austrian history. These objects tell stories of the people who inhabited and worked in this place.

The castle is open to visitors year-round except from November to mid-December when it closes. It is best to check current availability before visiting and wear comfortable shoes, since exploring involves multiple levels and old staircases.

Between 1675 and 1690, witch trials took place here resulting in 139 convictions. This tragic chapter reveals a dark period from the European past that is now part of the site's historical story.
