Reumannhof, Residential complex in Margareten, Vienna, Austria
Reumannhof is a residential complex in Margareten comprising three blocks linked by pathways and stretching 180 meters along Margaretengürtel. The buildings enclose a central courtyard with geometric paving patterns and house apartments of various sizes plus commercial spaces.
The complex was built between 1924 and 1926 by architect Hubert Gessner during Vienna's expansion of municipal housing. In 1934 it became a strategic location during the Austrian Civil War.
The name honors Jakob Reumann, Vienna's first social-democratic mayor, and the complex shows how such housing projects were designed as places for community life. Residents and visitors can see how these buildings reflected the housing ideals of their time.
The central courtyard is accessible to visitors and offers a quiet spot for walking and observing daily life. The site is well-connected by public transport and located in a busy neighborhood with many shops and cafes.
The central courtyard features an intricate black-and-white patterned pavement and a bronze bust of Jakob Reumann sculpted by Franz Seifert. These artistic touches show how careful attention was paid to design details even in housing for ordinary residents.
