Lechquellenrunde
The Lechquellenrunde is a multi-day trail in Vorarlberg that passes through varied mountain landscapes and ends at huts where hikers sleep overnight. The route features clear markings and changing terrain, moving from forested valleys to rocky high mountain areas while passing places like Biberacher Hütte, Formarinsee, and Steinerne Meer.
The trail was developed to bring hikers into the mountain world of the Lech springs and combines traditional alpine farming practices with modern trekking. The huts themselves are long-established places where generations of shepherds and later hikers have stayed overnight.
The name Lechquellenrunde refers to the springs of the Lech river in this region. The huts along the route cook with regional products and local ingredients, showing visitors how people sustain themselves and eat in mountain communities.
The best time to hike is from summer through early autumn, when snow does not block the paths, and the route can be shortened or extended depending on your own pace and fitness. The paths are well marked, and the huts offer lodging with meals, so it is wise to check reservations in advance.
The highest point on the trail sits over 2400 meters, yet the route stays mostly below the snow line and can therefore be walked earlier in the year and later in the season than many other mountain trails. This allows visitors to experience the Alps during times when fewer hikers are present.
