Hannovermarkt, Vienna, Local food market in Brigittenau, Vienna, Austria
Hannovermarkt is a local food market in the Brigittenau district stretching along Hannovergasse, with around 55 permanent stalls selling fresh produce, meat, fish, and other goods. The space also includes restaurants and bars where visitors can eat and drink while shopping.
The market began in 1850 as Brigittamarkt in a different location in the district. It moved to its present site in 1913 and was renamed Hannovermarkt in 1930.
The market draws vendors and shoppers from many Middle Eastern backgrounds who bring halal meats and international goods to the stalls. This mix of people and products reflects how Vienna has become home to communities from around the world.
The market operates weekdays from 6 AM to 9 PM, with most stalls closing by 6 PM on Saturdays. Since restaurants and bars stay open longer, you can easily grab a bite after shopping.
Every Saturday over 20 local farmers from the Vienna region bring their products to sell directly to shoppers. This weekly tradition connects the market to the surrounding countryside and its seasonal harvests.
