Spinnerei Harland, Historic silk mill in St. Pölten, Austria.
The Spinnerei Harland is a textile mill in St. Pölten featuring large windows, brick architecture, and multiple buildings for production and processing. The complex displays typical characteristics of 19th-century industrial architecture with spacious manufacturing halls.
The mill was founded in 1859 by Mathias Salcher and grew from a sawmill into a major textile facility. Until its closure in 1991, it employed around 1,400 workers.
The mill shaped worker life by building schools, kindergartens, and housing directly within the Harland neighborhood. These facilities created a self-contained community where the factory and residential spaces were closely intertwined.
As a protected monument, the mill is no longer accessible as a working factory but stands under protection for its architectural value. Viewing from the outside provides a good overview of the complex's size and structure.
The facility was known for producing iron yarn under special brand names such as Gemse, Swan, Butterfly, Lion, and Scales. These product names reflect the craftsmanship tradition and marketing strategy of the business in the 19th century.
