Schloss Götzendorf, Medieval castle in Oepping, Austria
Schloss Götzendorf is a four-winged castle with a central courtyard reached through a barrel-vaulted passageway. The courtyard itself is almost square in shape and surrounded on all sides by the building's wings.
The castle first appeared in written records in 1180 when Walter von Gocynesdorf was mentioned in a document from Wilhering Abbey. This early record shows that the family had roots and holdings in this area from the very beginning.
The chapel inside honors Mary with a copy of a late Gothic Madonna sculpture. This artwork shows the kind of religious art that has been important to people in this region for many centuries.
The castle sits to the northwest of nearby Sprinzenstein and can be reached by road from Rohrbach via Lanzerstorf or from the north through Oepping. The roads leading to it are clearly marked and easy to follow.
A fire in 1899 damaged sections of the building, and when it was rebuilt in 1901, the western wing was left unrestored. This unfinished work from over a century ago still shapes how the castle looks today.
