Josefstädter Straße, Metro station in Vienna
Josefstädter Straße is an above-ground subway station on Vienna's U6 line, positioned at the boundary between the 8th and 16th districts. Two staircases descend from the main hall to platforms protected by trapezoid-shaped roofs, while two elevators provide accessible access for all visitors.
Originally built for the Gürtellinie steam train, the station was completed in 1895 and began operating in 1898 as part of Vienna's early electric network. After closure following World War One, it reopened in the mid-1920s and was adapted for the U6 line in 1989.
The station sits where old Viennese buildings meet daily neighborhood life, with residents and visitors moving through its spaces to reach the cafes and shops around Josefstadt.
The station connects the U6 line with tram lines 2 and 12, which stop nearby and provide access to other parts of the city. Visitors will find elevators, staircases, and escalators that make reaching the platforms straightforward.
The station houses the Carina tavern in its southern section, a place that has been part of station life for many years. The northern area provides shelter for unhoused people, showing how the station serves social needs beyond just transportation.
