Brunnenmarkt, Street market in Ottakring district, Vienna, Austria
Brunnenmarkt is a street market in the Ottakring district with around 170 stalls stretching between Thaliastrasse and Ottakringer Strasse. Here you find fresh fruits and vegetables, spices, flowers, clothing, and household goods from local and international vendors.
The market started in 1830 as a small trading place and gradually developed from temporary wooden structures set up daily to permanent stalls. The decisive change came in 2005 when the street closed to cars and the market took on its current form.
The market shows Vienna's diversity, with vendors from different countries selling their own regional specialties and creating a mix of European and Middle Eastern goods. The languages, colors, and smells you encounter here reflect the city's migration history and how different communities animate this place together.
The market is accessible and easy to navigate, with wide paths between stalls where you can walk and shop comfortably. It is best to come early in the morning or late afternoon when there is less crowding and selection remains good.
With about 160 permanent stalls spanning multiple blocks, this is one of Vienna's longest street markets and among Europe's largest. The sheer span means shoppers can spend hours exploring without seeing the entire market.
