Carnuntum civil amphitheatre, Roman amphitheatre in Petronell-Carnuntum, Austria.
The Carnuntum amphitheatre is a stone structure featuring a central arena measuring 68 by 52 meters. Twelve rows of elevated seating surrounded this arena, with additional areas including animal kennels and training spaces for fighters.
The structure was built in the first half of the 2nd century during Carnuntum's most prosperous period. It sat within a densely settled suburb located just 300 meters inside the city wall.
Visitors can see how seating arrangements reflected social standing, with different sections reserved for various ranks and classes. The layout reveals how Romans organized their society even during entertainment events.
The site is relatively accessible with informative displays explaining the different areas. Visitors should prepare for outdoor conditions and wear sturdy shoes, as the ground is uneven in places.
Excavations revealed that the arena wall changed color from yellow to red over time. A marble facing was applied in its final phase, making it one of the most refined features of the site.
