Burgruine Hohenegg, Medieval castle ruins in Hafnerbach, Austria

The stone remains of Hohenegg Castle stand on a hill in Dunkelsteinerwald, featuring high walls, a bell tower, and multiple courtyards.

First documented in 1140, the castle belonged to Hermann von Stein and later passed through several noble families including the Counts of Hohenburg.

The castle transformed from a medieval fortress to a Renaissance palace in 1584 under Albrecht Enenkel, reflecting the architectural changes of the period.

The ruins are maintained by the Verein Burg Hohenegg organization, which manages preservation efforts and coordinates visitor access to the site.

During World War II, resistance members from Markersdorf Air Base used the isolated castle grounds as their secret meeting location.
