Frauen-Werk-Stadt, Housing development in Floridsdorf, Vienna, Austria.
Frauen-Werk-Stadt is a residential complex in Floridsdorf with 357 apartments spread across multiple buildings offering shared spaces, a kindergarten, medical services, and shops. The apartments have kitchen windows overlooking outdoor play areas, and residents can access laundry facilities and a large communal roof terrace.
Construction took place between 1995 and 1997, commissioned by Vienna's women's office to address specific urban living needs. The project marked a turning point in how urban planners approached residential design.
The development was created with the idea that women should have a say in designing living spaces. When you walk through the buildings, you notice wide hallways made for strollers, windows positioned to overlook play areas, and gathering spaces designed for socializing.
The complex is accessible on foot with pathways between buildings wide enough for strollers, scooters, and bikes. Visiting during daytime hours allows you to better observe the common areas and how people use the shared spaces.
The entire building project was led by women, from planning through construction oversight. This choice was uncommon at the time and influenced many similar developments across Europe afterward.
