Summer Amphitheatre, Open-air theatre in Vitebsk, Belarus
The Summer Amphitheatre is an open-air theatre in Vitebsk, Belarus, built into the slope of a ravine so that the tiered seating follows the natural terrain. A multi-story stage building stands at the bottom, and a large arched roof covers the audience area, allowing the venue to host several thousand spectators.
The amphitheatre was designed by architect Vyacheslav Babashkin and built in 1987, opening for its first concert in 1988. In the years that followed, the venue was expanded and modernised to keep up with the growing scale of international events held there.
The Slavianski Bazaar festival has taken place here every year since the venue opened, bringing performers from many Slavic countries to Vitebsk. During the festival, the open-air setting gives the performances a particular energy that indoor theatres cannot easily reproduce.
Because the seating follows a natural slope, visitors with mobility difficulties should be aware that reaching some sections involves climbing or descending steps. Arriving early gives you time to find your section and settle in before the event starts.
The arched roof rests on a structure made of around 18,000 metal cores and 3,000 metal balls, which together allow it to bear loads of several hundred tons. This approach made it possible to cover a large area without any visible supports in front of the stage.
