Yakub Kolas Theatre, National academic drama theater in Vitebsk, Belarus
Yakub Kolas Theatre is a state academic theater in Vitebsk, Belarus, with three separate performance spaces: a main stage, a traditional hall, and a smaller chamber venue. The range of spaces allows the company to present productions of very different scales and styles under one roof.
The theater was founded on November 21, 1926, under the name Belarusian State Theatre, with a founding company trained at a studio in Moscow. It grew over the following decades into one of the leading stages in Vitebsk and was recognized with national awards for its productions.
Performances at this theater are given mainly in Belarusian, a language that many visitors rarely hear spoken on stage elsewhere in the region. This makes attending a show here a direct encounter with a living artistic tradition that feels genuinely local.
The theater sits in central Vitebsk and can be reached on foot or by local transport from most parts of the city. It is a good idea to check the program in advance, as the schedule changes by season and some shows fill up quickly.
The theater won the USSR National Prize in 1946 for its production of Nestserka, a distinction awarded to very few theater companies across the country at that time. The play itself remains closely linked to the story of this house and is considered a landmark of Belarusian dramatic writing.
