5th Canadian Division Support Base Gagetown, Military base and heliport in New Brunswick, Canada

The 5th Canadian Division Support Base Gagetown sits across mixed forests, swamps, marshlands, and agricultural areas in southwestern New Brunswick. The installation includes hundreds of buildings, an extensive network of roads and tracks, and modern infrastructure for helicopter and air operations.

The base opened in 1958 following the largest land expropriation in New Brunswick history, which displaced about 2,000 residents. It was created as a training facility during the Cold War and remains a major military installation for Canada's defense operations.

St. Mary's Chapel on the base offers religious services in English and French, reflecting the bilingual tradition of Canadian military forces. Visitors can explore this chapel and sense the religious practices that shape life on the installation.

Keep in mind this is an active military installation with security restrictions, so access to many areas may be limited. It is best to check ahead about which locations are open to visitors and what permission may be needed.

The installation maintains its own comprehensive infrastructure system and even supplies water and sewage treatment services to the neighboring town of Oromocto. This self-sufficiency shows the scale and independence required to run such a large military facility every day.
