Quebec City Zoo, Zoo in Charlesbourg, Canada.
The Quebec City Zoo was a former animal park in the Charlesbourg district of Quebec City, covering around nine hectares and housing both Canadian and international species. The grounds have since been converted into a public park called Parc des Moulins, where the old zoo spaces can still be explored on foot.
The zoo opened in 1931 and was rebuilt in 1938 after flood damage, with new structures added for birds at that time. It stayed open for more than seven decades before closing in 2006.
The site is now called Parc des Moulins, a name that refers to the old mills that once stood in the area. Visitors walking through the park can still see traces of the former animal enclosures, which give the grounds an unusual character compared to a typical city park.
The park is on Avenue du Zoo in Charlesbourg and is freely accessible to the public. The grounds cover a large area, so wearing comfortable walking shoes makes the visit much easier.
Over its years of operation, the zoo welcomed around 15 million visitors in total, a number that reflects how deeply rooted it was in the life of the region. This is especially notable given that Charlesbourg is a relatively small district.
