Cap Tourmente National Wildlife Area, National Wildlife Area in Saint-Joachim, Canada.
Cap Tourmente is a protected area along the Saint Lawrence River featuring tidal marshes, coastal meadows, and wooded sections. The site blends different habitats that support migratory birds and other wildlife throughout the year.
Indigenous peoples known as the St. Lawrence Iroquoians left traces of their presence over 2000 years ago in this coastal region. The area was later protected to preserve its natural resources for wildlife and research.
The site functions as a research center for migratory bird patterns and environmental conservation, supporting scientific studies of North American waterfowl populations.
Hiking trails are open from May through October, allowing visitors to explore the different habitats at their own pace. Winter access is available on separate routes, though conditions can be more challenging during the colder months.
The area contains the majority of Quebec's bulrush marshes and serves as a feeding ground for tens of thousands of greater snow geese during migration periods. This concentration makes it a remarkable location for observing waterfowl.
