Bishop Feild College, Heritage high school in St. John's, Canada
Bishop Feild College is a two-story brick and limestone building at 46 Bond Street designed in Gothic Revival style with limestone entrances, crenellations, and pointed archways. Its careful details show the craftsmanship and ambition of the Victorian period.
Bishop Feild was founded in 1844 by Bishop Edward Feild and eventually moved to its current Bond Street location when the building was completed in 1928. The founding reflected efforts to bring higher-quality English education to Newfoundland.
The school drew students from prosperous families across Newfoundland and followed English teaching traditions. Visitors can sense how this place shaped education and social connections in the province for generations.
The building now functions as Bishop Feild Elementary School serving students from kindergarten through sixth grade. Since the school is an active educational facility, visits work best outside of school hours.
Four decorative plaques at the entrance display the coats of arms of the school, city, province, and diocese. These plaques tell a story about the different layers of identity and belonging that connected this place to its community and region.
