The stone octagonal tower features three red horizontal stripes on white exterior and rises 82 feet above the rocky Sambro Island.

Construction began in 1758 through legislation by Nova Scotia's House of Assembly, establishing a tax on incoming vessels to fund the project.

The lighthouse earned recognition as a National Historic Site in 1937, representing maritime navigation heritage in North America.

Solar-powered beacons now illuminate the structure with a range of 24 nautical miles, guiding vessels through Halifax Harbour's entrance.
