Devils Island Light, Maritime lighthouse on Devils Island, Nova Scotia.
Devils Island Light is an octagonal wooden lighthouse positioned at the entrance to Halifax Harbour. The white tower stands on a small island where its light sweeps across the water to guide passing vessels.
A lighthouse structure was first built on the island in 1852, but a new facility replaced it and began operating in 1877. This tower became an essential navigation aid for ships entering Halifax Harbour for many decades.
The island was home to lighthouse keeper families who lived and worked there for generations. These communities shaped daily life on the outpost until automation changed its role.
The lighthouse is visible from the water, particularly at night when its white light is operating. Visitors should know that the island is small and access to the shore is limited.
The island was once called Isle Verte and covered with trees, looking very different from its current barren state. Today it holds abandoned dwellings left behind by families who once maintained the lighthouse.
