Dartmouth Refinery, Oil refinery in Dartmouth, Canada
Dartmouth Refinery is an oil processing facility on the east side of Halifax Harbour covering a large industrial area with tanks, pipes, and processing structures. The site contained equipment designed to convert crude oil into heating oil and gasoline for distribution across the region.
The facility was established in 1918 during World War I to supply fuel for military operations. It expanded significantly during World War II and remained a major energy supplier for Atlantic Canada for decades afterward.
The refinery shaped industrial work culture in Nova Scotia, providing jobs that sustained families for generations. It became central to the identity of workers and their communities across the region.
The site is located on Halifax Harbour's waterfront and visible from the road, but public access to the facility itself is restricted. Views are best from the water or nearby public areas along the harbor.
Before the refinery, Fort Clarence, an 18th-century military installation, stood on this site to defend Halifax Harbour from naval attacks. The old fort was dismantled to make way for the industrial facility.
