Gannet Rock Lighthouse, Lighthouse on rocky islet near Grand Manan Island, Canada
Gannet Rock Lighthouse is an octagonal wooden tower on a rocky islet near Grand Manan Island in Canada. The tower has a concrete base, vertical black and white stripes, and a metal lantern mounted on its flared top.
The structure was built in 1831 to warn ships of dangerous shoals in the Bay of Fundy. It was originally equipped with a red glass lantern that gave the waters its distinctive marker.
The lighthouse is connected to handwritten journals kept by lighthouse keeper Walter McLaughlin, which document daily life at this remote station.
The lighthouse has been powered by solar energy since 2002 and operates independently of external power. The location is remote and surrounded by water, so visitors should be prepared for challenging access conditions.
During World War I, lighthouse keeper Allen Wilson offered shelter to the crew of the Dornfontein after it was attacked by a German submarine. This episode reveals the important role the location played as a refuge during wartime.
