Ermatinger Clergue National Historic Site

The Ermatinger Clergue National Historic Site is a museum complex in Sault Ste. Marie with multiple buildings, including a Heritage Discovery Centre and stone structures from the 19th century. The site displays how people lived and worked during the early European settlement period in this region.

The Ermatinger Old Stone House was built between 1814 and 1823 and served as a courthouse, post office, and hotel before becoming a museum. The Clergue Blockhouse was originally a powder magazine at a trading post and was relocated to the site in 1996 for preservation.

Costumed interpreters in period rooms demonstrate how people lived and worked during the early settlement of Northern Ontario. They carry out daily tasks and crafts that give visitors a direct sense of life in that era.

The site features a Heritage Discovery Centre with exhibits and a gift shop for visitors. Seasonal demonstrations occur throughout the year, so plan your visit based on the season to see different aspects of daily work and activities.

The Clergue Blockhouse was originally a powder magazine at a French fur trading post before being moved to this location. Many visitors miss this earlier purpose and see the building simply as part of the museum grounds.
