Flachsee

Flachsee is a reservoir covering approximately 72 hectares of water with a maximum depth of 7 meters. The body of water is surrounded by wetland areas that support a wide variety of plant and animal life.

The reservoir was created in 1975 following the construction of a hydroelectric dam on the Reuss River. Since then, it has become an important refuge for water birds and aquatic life.

The reservoir serves as a breeding habitat for water birds like herons and geese that nest in protected areas. Visitors can observe these bird communities from designated viewing platforms throughout the year.

Several viewing platforms and observation stations are located around the water, offering good vantage points for watching birds. During warmer months, a ferry service provides an alternative way to explore the area.

Five small islands within the lake create protected breeding areas that are completely restricted from human access. This separation keeps these nesting grounds undisturbed and ensures safe spaces for birds to raise their young.
