Esterliturm, Concrete observation tower in Lenzburg, Switzerland.
Esterliturm is an observation tower in Lenzburg, in the canton of Aargau, built from stacked concrete pipe segments. A platform at the top gives a broad view over the hills and fields of the surrounding region.
The tower was built in 1974 by the local community as a viewing point for Lenzburg and the surrounding area. The use of concrete pipe segments as a construction method was uncommon for this type of structure at the time.
The tower sits at the edge of a forested area and draws families and hikers looking for a short outing in the countryside. The spiral staircase inside the structure is part of the experience for many who make the climb.
The tower is open year-round with no restrictions on entry, so visitors can stop by at any time. On clear days, the staircase and platform can get crowded, so an early visit tends to be more comfortable.
The tower is made from 19 concrete pipe segments stacked on top of each other, a technique normally used for underground infrastructure. These segments were originally designed for drainage or sewer construction and were repurposed for this project.
