Chnebelburg, Archaeological fortress site on Jäissberg near Bellmund, Switzerland.
Chnebelburg is an archaeological fortress site on Jäissberg near Bellmund with an oval shape stretching roughly 135 meters in length. The earthen walls were once topped with wooden defensive structures and palisades, which today remain visible as raised ground formations.
This fort was built during the High Middle Ages as a wooden defensive structure. It disappeared by the 13th century and unlike other fortifications was never rebuilt in stone.
The name Chnebelburg comes from the Bernese dialect and refers to construction methods using wooden stakes and palisades. The earthen walls still show the original shape of this medieval fort.
The site sits at approximately 610 meters elevation and is accessible via local hiking trails. Regional maps and archaeological guides help with orientation when visiting.
The earthwork formations are so well preserved that the original oval shape is immediately recognizable. This makes the site a rare example of visible early medieval wooden architecture built without stone structures.
