Welle von Bern, Pedestrian bridge at Bern Railway Station, Switzerland
Welle von Bern is a pedestrian bridge at Bern Railway Station featuring six undulating roof sections that connect the western side platforms. The structure spans across multiple train tracks and provides direct access to sectors C and D through integrated elevators and escalators.
The structure was completed in December 2004 and replaced an earlier crossing that lacked elevators and modern accessibility features. Its design contributed significantly to the Swiss Federal Railways receiving the Wakker Prize in 2005.
Architects Ursula Stücheli and Beat Mathys from Smarch studio designed this 13.3-meter-wide structure to replace an older crossing without elevators.
The bridge provides a covered route through the western side of the station and serves thousands of passengers daily who need to cross the tracks. Multiple elevators and staircases make navigation straightforward for travelers with luggage or accessibility needs.
The six wave-shaped roof sections create an organic form that contrasts strikingly with the strict geometry of typical railway infrastructure. From different viewing angles, the undulating design reveals distinct silhouettes and becomes a natural subject for photographs.
