Orbe Castle

Orbe Castle is a medieval fortress situated on a hilltop overlooking the town of Orbe in Vaud canton. The structure features a square tower and a circular keep, both built to command views of the surrounding valley and roads.

The fortress first appears in written records during 864 when Emperor Louis II and Lothair II held a meeting at the site. The castle suffered partial destruction in 1475 during a Swiss military campaign that left lasting damage to its structures.

The castle serves as a landmark that helps visitors understand how medieval communities organized their defenses and settlements in this region. Its prominent position above the town shows how rulers once used fortifications to assert control over the surrounding landscape and people.

The circular tower contains a permanent exhibition about the castle's history, allowing visitors to explore the medieval structure up close. Wear comfortable shoes for the steep climb up the hill, as the interior staircases and uneven surfaces require careful footing.

The circular tower was the first of its kind in French-speaking Switzerland and features arrow slits that were later adapted for medieval firearms. This early blend of round tower design with modified shooting holes demonstrates how fortifications were updated as weapons technology changed.
