Spiegelberg ruins, Castle ruin in Muriaux, Switzerland

Spiegelberg is a castle ruin perched on a rocky ridge in the Jura mountains, standing at approximately 1079 meters (3540 feet) above the Doubs Valley. Parts of the original stone walls remain visible, giving a clear picture of the fortress structure.

The castle was built in medieval times as a defensive stronghold and served to control mountain passages. Swedish forces destroyed it in 1636 during the Thirty Years' War, leading to its permanent abandonment.

The ruins represent medieval mountain fortifications built to control passages through the Jura, and their placement on the ridge shows how builders chose defensible locations. Walking around the site gives a sense of how important such structures were to the region.

The site is accessible via a marked hiking trail starting from Le Noirmont, taking around 30 minutes on foot through hilly terrain. A small mountain refuge at the ruins offers basic overnight accommodation and cooking facilities for visitors.

Old photographs at the refuge bring the site's history to life, while views across the valley show just how commanding the fortress location was. Visitors can spend a night in this simple setting and experience the ruins at sunrise or sunset.
