Blauenstein

Blauenstein is a medieval castle ruin located on a narrow rocky ridge in the Kleinlützel region. The stone remains sit at about 608 meters elevation and overlook the surrounding forests and valleys.

The castle was built in the late 1100s by the Biederthal family and shaped the region for centuries. In 1411, Basel forces destroyed the fortress during a campaign against Rudolf von Neuenstein.

The site reflects layers of different periods that visitors can observe while exploring the ruins. The remains suggest this ridge top held importance as a settlement across multiple centuries.

You can reach the ruins by following marked hiking trails from the village of Kleinlützel. Information signs along the way explain the history and help you understand what you are seeing.

Archaeological excavations have uncovered evidence of Roman settlements on the ridge, showing the site was used in ancient times. These findings suggest the location sat on an important network of ancient pathways.
