Blauenstein, Castle ruin near Kleinlützel, Switzerland
The stone remains of Blauenstein Castle stand on a narrow rocky ridge at 608 meters elevation, overlooking the surrounding valleys and forests.
The castle, built in the late 12th century by the noble Biederthal family, met its end in 1411 when Basel forces burned it during their pursuit of Rudolf von Neuenstein.
The archaeological excavations at Blauenstein revealed evidence of Roman settlements, indicating the site served as a junction of ancient pathways on the Blauenbergkette.
Visitors can reach the castle ruins by following marked hiking trails starting from the village of Kleinlützel, with informational panels explaining the site's history.
The castle earned its protection status as a class B Swiss cultural property due to the preserved medieval architecture and archaeological findings spanning multiple centuries.
