The building opened in 1909 following a generous donation from Ali Jeanrenaud, marking a turning point in Swiss funeral practices. Its construction reflected the modernization of cremation as an alternative to traditional burial methods.

The interior displays artistic mosaics and reliefs depicting themes of mortality and remembrance. These decorative elements shape the solemn feeling visitors experience when entering the building.

The building is accessible Monday through Friday in the morning from 8:00 to 11:30 and in the afternoon from 14:00 to 16:30. Plan ahead since it serves primarily ceremonial purposes and access may be limited.

The artistic details were crafted by Charles L'Eplattenier and his students, making this cremation facility an unexpected artwork. The building was officially recognized as a property of national cultural importance in 1988.
