Rigi Kulm Hotel, Mountain hotel at Rigi summit, Switzerland
The Rigi Kulm Hotel sits atop the Rigi mountain at 1,798 meters elevation and contains 33 rooms with views across about 125 peaks and thirteen lakes in central Switzerland. The building features dining facilities and event spaces that serve both guests and visitors coming to the summit.
The hotel opened for the first time on August 6, 1816, and underwent three major reconstructions over its life. The Kappeli family purchased it in 1949 and brought it into the modern era.
The dining room displays a tea set from Ludwig II of Bavaria, showing the hotel's historical ties to European nobility. The location has always attracted wealthy guests who appreciated the elevation and panoramic setting.
The hotel can only be reached by two cog railways: the Vitznau-Rigi line or the Arth-Rigi line, as no direct road serves the location. Visitors should plan travel time for the railway journey and expect weather conditions to change significantly at this elevation.
The building houses the Panorama and Kulm hall that can hold up to 360 people and was originally designed as a theater space. Today this venue also hosts business conferences and seminars, showing an unexpected multifunctional purpose at such a remote location.
