Banqiao Dam, Hydroelectric dam in Zhumadian, China
Banqiao Dam is a hydroelectric barrier on the Ru River in Zhumadian, Henan Province, extending nearly four kilometers and controlling a large upstream catchment. The current structure is concrete, regulated by eight mechanical gates that open and close according to water levels and seasonal needs.
Soviet engineers helped China build the original structure in the early 1950s as part of postwar reconstruction after the civil war. The barrier broke in the summer of 1975 during a major typhoon, and a replacement followed nearly two decades later.
The name Banqiao translates directly as Plank Bridge, referring to an old timber crossing that once stood at this point on the Ru River. Local fishermen now work the reservoir with small boats, moving between the shores as part of daily routines.
Visitors get the clearest view from the southern bank, where a narrow path runs along the barrier and offers open sight of the gates and riverbed. During rainy months, the spillways are visibly open, showing the operation of the facility.
After the failure, China conducted extensive reviews of hundreds of reservoirs and developed new safety criteria for structures in rainy regions. This facility now serves as a training site for engineers studying flood control and reservoir safety.
