Kounicovy koleje

Kounicovy koleje is a building complex in the Žabovřesky district featuring two residential blocks with functional architecture from the 1920s. The structures display clean geometric forms and linear facades that define the character of the neighborhood.

The complex was built in 1922 following a donation in 1908 that initiated the creation of student housing. After Czech universities closed in 1939, the building served as a prison until 1945.

A memorial in the courtyard honors those who lost their lives here during World War II. The space carries this remembrance as a central part of its identity for visitors today.

The building stands in a residential neighborhood and can be viewed from outside, with the courtyard accessible to visitors. It is advisable to check access conditions beforehand to ensure you can enter the interior spaces.

The complex originated from a count's donation of a city palace that eventually led to this large student housing project. This 1908 philanthropic gesture made possible one of the more substantial residential complexes of its era.
