Janovský mokřad, Nature reserve near Nýřany, Czech Republic
Janovský mokřad is a wetland reserve near Nýřany covering approximately 71 hectares, featuring water bodies, streams, and diverse habitat types. The landscape developed through natural water accumulation and the engineering work of beavers, which have significantly shaped the terrain.
The area developed from a former pond that was dismantled in the 19th century due to safety risks from underground mining operations. Gradual natural processes later restored the wetland into an important ecological zone.
The reserve implements educational programs and walking trails to inform visitors about wetland ecosystems and water retention in landscapes.
The reserve has marked paths that guide visitors through the area safely. Sturdy footwear is recommended, and it is important to keep distance from water birds and respect their habitats.
European beavers have constructed approximately 50 hectares of complex water systems over decades that now support hundreds of bird and insect species. Their dams continuously reshape the landscape and create new habitats as the animals work.
