Scharnebeck twin ship lift, boat lift
The Scharnebeck twin ship lift is a large hoisting structure near Lüneburg that transports ships between two different water levels. It features two enormous water-filled troughs where ships sit, along with a massive steel framework with cables and counterweights that raise and lower these troughs.
The ship lift was completed in 1974 and was the largest of its kind in the world at that time. The first vessel used the facility on December 5, 1975.
The name refers to the location of Scharnebeck where the structure stands. Visitors can observe how ships enter the troughs and watch the water support them as the entire chamber moves to transfer boats between levels.
Visitors can observe the facility from the bank and viewing platforms offer a good view of the operation. Plan your visit during daytime hours when the lift is active and ships are passing through.
The facility uses 224 counterweights in each trough to balance the water and ships, making the movement easier. This clever balancing system allows the mechanism to move the troughs swiftly, requiring only about three minutes for a complete raise or lower operation.
